Balboa Park rules state that all pedicabs operating in the Park do so on a “Donations Accepted” basis and as such, are prohibited from posting a fare schedule. Neither the City of San Diego nor Balboa Park compensates me for providing pedicab service in the park; my revenue is based solely on the generosity of you, my passengers.

So what is an appropriate donation? There are several factors to consider when making a donation for a pedicab ride:

The FUN factor. Was it a unique and fun trip? Did the kids think it was the coolest thing they've ever done?

Number of passengers. Generally the pedicab comfortably holds two adults. It is not uncommon to have two adults and two children sitting on laps. More passengers = more weight (and more work for the driver.)

Distance. Is the trip a short point-to-point ride or a tour through the entire park? A quick hop to the Prado Restaurant or the Old Globe Theater from the parking lot may only be ¼ mile, while a trip across the park could be a mile or more.

Educational value. This applies particularly to the tours; did you find the information useful and interesting? Did it help you plan your day in the park? Did you learn something new?

Over time, distinct trends develop in donations received, the following is provided as a useful guideline for selecting the appropriate donation:

Point-to-point trips generally range from $5 to $20 (per ride) depending on the number of passengers and the distance traveled.

Tours average about $1/minute; so $30 to $60 (total) is common for tours in the 30-60 minute range.

Remember: Naturally the ultimate decision rests with you, the passenger, based on how enjoyable you found the ride. All donations are graciously accepted and deeply appreciated.
